     I have been collecting casino chips since the early part of the new millenium. I’ve been collecting them very hard and very fast! I started collecting casino chips on ebay and then started buying chips privately from some "big time" collectors.

     I became interested in collecting after a friend of mine told me a story of how he had found an old casino chip when cleaning out his Grandmother’s house after she had passed away. He was going through a desk drawer when he found an old El Rancho Vegas $5 chip. Now, my friend is also a collector of old Coca Cola soda machines. He went to a collector’s show and found another machine that he wanted. The Coke machine was worth about $4,000.00. When he asked the seller if he was interested in trading, the seller asked him what he had to trade. My friend took out his chip and showed it to the seller. The seller, being knowledgeable in chips, realized the value and took the chip in trade along with $600 cash. I was amazed that a $5 casino chip could be worth so much! This story peaked my interest and that’s how I started collecting casino chips.

     I soon realized that I had to narrow my chip buying down to more specific areas of interest. I found this very hard to do! (Can any of you relate?)  I started concentrating my efforts (and $$) on more expensive (and rare) casino chips, which I found to be much more interesting and exciting to try to locate and purchase. I also found them much interesting to look at as well!  These "higher end" casino chips usually had much more intricate molds as well as old historical pictures of the casino or the figures that the casinos used to represent them and this always seemed to attract my attention.

     Well, once I started buying “higher end” chips I decided to start selling off the other chips that I already owned.  I began to resell them on ebay. This evolved into My eBay Store (selling under my ebay name “scanman18”) and has now evolved into “TopShelfChips.com”.

     I have become quite knowledgeable since I began collecting casino chips, but I realize there will always be much more to learn...

    I have become friends with some really great Collectors too. I consider these Collectors to be not only friends, but mentors as well. They have helped me in many ways! Through their expertise and friendship I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have in such a short period of time! I hope you don’t mind if I say thanks to Tyrus Mulkey, James Campiglia, Mark Freitag, Steve McLendon, Doug Saito and Henry Garrett. These are but a few of the great Collectors I’ve run into since I began collecting!

    I would also like to thank my lovely wife Rosie for her unending patience and understanding while I was spending so many hours on the computer and so much money on casino chips!
